3G is a general term for cellular phone system of the third generation. It indicates digital cellular phone which conforms to "IMT-2000" standard established by ITU. Basically it applies CDMA system (some applies improved version of TDMA system) and it is said that various services using high-speed data transmission or multimedia can be provided. It is famous that in May 2001, NTT DOCOMO started "FOMA" as a trial service using W-CDMA system ahead of the world. The real service of CDMA was also started by FOMA in October 2001.
