Computer assisted instruction (CAI) is a term most often refers to of educational instruction performed almost entirely by computer. Such systems typically incorporate functions such as assessing student capabilities, presenting educational materials, drill and practice, tutorial, or simulation activities offered either by themselves or as supplements to traditional teacher directed instruction.
The first general-purpose system for computer-assisted instruction was the PLATO System developed at The University of Illinois.
