CL is an acronym for Common Lisp. It is a dialect of the Lisp programming language. Common Lisp was developed as a result of unify the numerous Lisp dialects (most notably, InterLisp, Maclisp, ZetaLisp, and Franz Lisp) into a single language. The new language, Common Lisp, was a compatible subset of the dialects it replaced. In 1994, ANSI published the Common Lisp standard, "ANSI X3.226-1994 Information Technology Programming Language Common Lisp."

There are several implementations of the Common Lisp standard are available, including commercial products and open source software.
