DES
full spelling : Data Encryption Standard
The Data Encryption Standard is a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) approved cryptographic algorithm. DES is a cipher selected as an official Federal Information Processing Standard for the United States in 1976.
This cipher has a key consists of 64 binary digits ("O"s or "1"s) of which 56 bits are randomly generated and used directly by the algorithm. The other 8 bits, which are not used by the algorithm, are used for error detection. DES is now considered to be insecure for many applications. Data Encryption Standard (DES) has been superseded by the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
