DLT

full spelling : Digital Linear Tape

The Digital Linear Tape is a form of magnetic tape storage technology used for computer data storage and archiving. Digital Linear Tape was first developed by Digital Equipment Corporation in 1984. It was later purchased by Quantum Corporation, who currently manufactures drives and licenses the technology and trademark.

DLT cartridges can hold 70 gigabytes of data when compression is used. A variant with higher capacity is called Super DLT (SDLT). Super DLT, makes it possible to store upwards of 100 gigabytes on a single cartridge. Some of the competing technologies of DLT include the linear tape open (LTO) drive and the advanced intelligent tape (AIT) drive.
