DTE stands for Data Terminal Equipment. Data Terminal Equipment is equipment that connects to a data network through a DCE device (such as a modem). DTE can be PC, workstation, repeater, fileservers, printers, etc (end point of a communications link). DTE uses signals generated by the DCE.
The data terminal equipment may be a single piece of equipment or an interconnected subsystem of multiple pieces of equipment that perform all the required functions necessary to permit users to communicate. DTE is typically a terminal and the DCE is a modem.
