Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution is a digital mobile phone technology designed to increase network capacity and data rates in GSM networks. EDGE is a technology that gives GSM and TDMA similar capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony.
Implementation of EDGE by network operators has been designed to be simple. EDGE requires no hardware or software changes to be made in GSM core networks. Only base stations have to be modified. This makes it easier for existing GSM carriers to upgrade to EDGE. The new EDGE capable transceiver can handle standard GSM traffic and will automatically switch to EDGE mode when needed. EDGE has been introduced into GSM networks around the world since 2003.
