crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing refers to the outsourcing of a product's or service's development to an unspecified group of individuals for little or no pay. Crowdsourcing most markedly differs from outsourcing by assigning the responsibility for development to an unspecified "crowd" of individuals, rather than qualified, trained professionals.

In the software development world, a type of crowdsourcing known as "opensource", in which a software's source code is released to the public via the internet for the purpose of refinement, has been in existence for a long time. However, crowdsourcing is used not only in software development, but also toward the development of industrial product ideas, web contents, etc.

Crowdsourcing relies on the internet to gather a large crowd of developpers from around the world, while many of these are people making use of their spare time. Both the work of development and communication between developers is coordinated through the internet. Some business models incorporating crowdsourcing tie remuneration for participating developers to success in development and/or the developed software itself.
